How to Play PokerDice:
You get three rolls of the dice in each round, then you must choose a score in the scoring table. After you click on one of the scores in the table, you start another round and get three more rolls of the dice again. This continues until all choices in the scoring table are taken. Then your final score appears at the bottom of the scoring table and you may start a new game.
You can hold onto any die's value by clicking on it after the first roll of the dice. You will see a square box appear around that die, which means that it will not change the next time you "roll to play." You get three rolls to try for each category, and you can hold any die's value at any time. You can also change your mind at any time and un-click a die if you think you have a better chance at scoring higher in some other category.
You can also choose to score after the first roll if you get just what you want. But once you choose one of the scores in the table, you lose any remaining rolls for that round and the next round of three rolls begins.
After each roll, the highest possible scores in each category appear in the scoring table. For example, if you have five ones showing, the number 5 appears in the category for ones, and the number 50 appears in the category for five-of-a-kind (if neither has been taken yet). You should usually select the highest score showing, and in this case you should definitely select five-of-a-kind.
Let's say that you are trying to get a high score on "sixes."
You roll the dice and are lucky enough to see two die appear with the number six (a 12 appears in the box for sixes). Click on those two die to hold them as sixes.
You roll the dice again and another die changes to a six (an 18 appears in the box for sixes). Click on that die, and now you have three sixes being held.
You get one more chance to roll the remaining dice.If you are really lucky, you get one more six (24 appears in the box for sixes, but 24 plus whatever the remaining die's value is also appears in the box labeled, "four-of-a-kind." Now you have to make a choice as to which box to check, depending upon how your score is going.
You get an extra bonus (a happy face appears) when you get more than 63 points in the top part of the scoring table (three of each kind). Getting four sixes gives you six extra points in that table, so you still have a chance to get the bonus, even if you don't get three of a kind for all the other values in that section. So if you only get two fives, you can still get the bonus if you break even and get three of a kind for all the other choices. But getting four sixes also gets you a really high score in the, "four-of-a-kind," category, so the decision depends on how the rest of the game is going. If you are already close and only need two sixes to get the bonus in the top part of the scoring table, you may want to take a chance that two sixes will turn up in the next three rolls of the dice.
Sixes (and fives) are always great to get, because they boost your overall score.
But "five-of-a-kind" gets you the biggest single score (50 points), and you can get this with five, "ones."A large straight is the next highest score, which is either 1,2,3,4,5 or 2,3,4,5,6.
A small straight (1,2,3,4 or 2,3,4,5 or 3,4,5,6) is relatively easy to get, so if you get this on the first roll, hold these and try for a large straight. Particularly if you get the 2,3,4,5 combination because you have two chances to get the large straight (either a one or a six).A full house is three of a kind plus two of a kind, so keep watch for this because you can also get high points with low values on the dice (3 ones and 2 twos, for example).
So after the first roll, look at what values appear, and what your best chances are at getting a high score in any category. If you get four-of-a-kind on the first roll (even if they are ones), definitely hold them and pray for that fifth die to appear. The, "ones" box at the top can be used as a "throw-away" box because you only lose three points (at most), and the odds are good that you will get four of a kind on some other value in that section so you can still get the bonus.
And save the, "scratch" box for the very end when you are still trying to get that elusive, "five-of-a-kind."
I hope this helps, and that it isn't too confusing, but PokerDice is a game of both chance and strategy. If your chance seems to be swinging in one direction, you have to change your strategy to suit.
