Download Help

Downloading a file from the web is like asking a friend to deliver a package inside your house.

You must tell your friend where to put the package, and then you must unpack it once it gets there.

If you forget where you told your friend to put the package, you have to go looking for it. Therefore, it is extrememly important to pay attention to two crucial things when you download a file from the web so you can find it and unpack it:

1. The NAME on the package (the filename).

2. And WHERE the package is delivered (the sub-directory or file-folder).

For example, when you click on the link to download the PokerDice game from DuckDiver.com, a window pops up similar to the following:

It displays the name, "InstallPokerDice.exe," and it asks if you want to, "Run the program from its current location," or "Save this program to disk."

You must choose, "Save this program to disk." Then it asks where you want to put the file, and you can Browse to look around and find a file folder to put the program into. But you must remember where you put the file, because it still needs to be unpacked.

Why Install the File After Downloading it?

Files downloaded from the web are usually compressed to save download time and to reduce the cost to transfer the file. Yes, every time you visit a website or download something from that site, the company that hosts the website charges the Webmaster for each bit of data that is sent (even the text and images you see on your screen).

Hosting services charge in blocks of data per month, so a site that gets a lot of traffic and allows people to download programs directly from the site often pays a substantial monthly fee (like we do). If the amount of traffic for any month exceeds the monthly quota, there are additional charges.

Professional installation software packages greatly increase the size of the file, which increases the cost to distribute files over the web, but they make it much simpler to install the software on your computer. We package the main programs available on DuckDiver this way to make your installation easy.

A program called, "PKZIP," is often used to package simple programs in ZIP files because it does not add much size to the file. This is for files that only have to be unpacked in one directory, and we use this to distribute the image file packs for the screen saver.

In either case, once the program file is downloaded from the web to your computer, it must be installed (or unpacked).

How to Find downloaded files on your computer:

1. Click on Start at the bottom left of the Windows screen.
2. Click on Programs in the menu bar that pops up.
3. Click on Windows Explorer in the menu bar that pops up.
4. You can now see the file folders on your system and look for the file.

If you still can't find the file after you downloaded it:

1. Click on Start at the bottom left of the Windows screen.
2. Click on Find in the menu bar that pops up.
3. Enter the name of the file you are looking for in the box for, "Named."
4. Click on the pull-down arrow in the, "Look in" box and select the, "C:\" drive.
5. Click on the checkbox for, "Include subfolders" (make sure the checkmark appears).
6. Click on, "Find Now."

If the file is found on your PC, it will appear in the list section of the Find window. You can start the installation as described below:

How To Install (unpack) the Downloaded Software:

1. Double-click on the filename with the left mouse button (once you can see the filename on the right side of the Windows Explorer screen).
2. Follow the installation directions. This will unpack the software and create icons on your desktop and menu bar.
